Apple Is Giving Mysterious 'Points' to Apple Intelligence Beta Testers

Image
Apple Intelligence won't officially ship until the iOS 18.1 update later this year , but Apple's already asking for users to help train it, and it looks like the company might even reward them. That includes you, assuming you're willing to jump through a couple of hoops . Apple's beta programs have always been big on feedback, so it's not a surprise that its Generative AI efforts are taking the same approach. Here, Apple wants you to tell it if its AI is doing a good job or not, and if it didn't, what's going wrong. Your feedback will then be used to train and improve Apple Intelligence services and the AI models behind the scenes. For your trouble, Apple will even provide you with some points. What exactly you can do with these points is not entirely clear right now, but I'm hoping they can be redeemed to get a paid upgrade for Apple Intelligence down the line. You can start your feedback under "Rate Your Experiences" in the Feedback Assista

You Can Make Your Own Chatbot With Meta's 'AI Studio'

Image
Last year, Meta announced a series of AI updates coming to Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. These new options included things like AI stickers, AI image editing, AI celebrity chatbots, and Meta AI assistant, which you can't turn off . During this time, the company also announced AI Studio, a platform for developers to build custom AI bots for Meta products. Now, Meta is expanding that access to you, inviting all users to create any AI bot they want. Custom AI bots are not a unique concept: OpenAI offers GPTs , for example, which lets you build custom versions of ChatGPT. Meta is doing something similar with AI Studio: You tell the platform exactly what you're looking for in a chatbot, and it builds it for you, without any coding experience necessary . If you want a bot that offers advice on cooking specifically with an air fryer, you can make it. If you want a bot that specializes in gardening advice, you can ask AI Studio to generate it. Meta is also pitching this as a t

How to Try Apple Intelligence Right Now

Image
Over the weekend, we learned Apple Intelligence , Apple's brand-name for its generative AI features, would not be shipping with iOS 18 after all , and would instead arrive with iOS 18.1. While Apple won't officially roll out Apple Intelligence until sometime later this fall, that doesn't mean these AI features will be totally absent until then. In fact, you can try them out right now—with some big caveats. On Monday, Apple dropped the first developer beta for iOS 18.1. This version of the beta is meant for registered developers, so they can test out the new software with their apps and services and make sure there are no critical issues with it. While that used to cost $99 per year, in recent years, Apple has opened up the developer beta to anyone interested, meaning you can install the iOS 18.1 developer beta on your iPhone, even if you're not an iOS developer. Apple Intelligence is not here for everyone Some caveats: Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 15

YouTube Has Launched Another Half-Baked Strategy to Kill Ad Blockers

Image
If you're noticing a few seconds of black before your YouTube videos start, you aren't alone: YouTube viewers, particularly those using uBlock Origin, are reporting an odd delay before videos begin playing . This likely isn't a glitch, however. As it turns out, it appears to be part of YouTube's latest escalation in its fight against ad blockers . YouTube is putting ads directly in its videos YouTube is now adding advertisements to the video stream itself, using something known as "server-side injection." Currently, the company delivers most of its ads to users as a separate video before the video you chose to watch. That allows ad blockers to identify the ad, stop it from playing, and load your video directly. If the ad is part of the video, however, the traditional ad blocker strategy breaks. The company didn't drop this new ad tactic out of thin air: The developer of SponsorBlock , an extension that automatically skips ahead of sponsored content in v

How to Stop X From Training Its AI With Your Posts

Image
It’s easy to forget that X has its own AI chatbot. It's called Grok , and it’s available to all X Premium subscribers, but that doesn’t mean free X users don’t get to interact with it. No, we plebeians get the benefit of training Grok on our posts, so it can turn around and reheat them for all of Elon Musk’s favorite boys and girls. It’s unclear exactly how long X has been training Grok on our data, but now, there’s at least a way to stop it. In a post to the @Safety account today, X wrote that all users now have the ability to define whether their posts can be used to train Grok, joining already existing controls dictating whether Grok can train based on your interactions with it.  How to stop Grok from training using your posts The toggle to turn this feature off (or on, I guess, but why would you want to do that?) is currently available on the web and will “soon be rolled out on mobile.” Find it by clicking here , then uncheck the box next to “Allow your posts as well as you

Everything You're Entitled to When Your Flight Gets Delayed or Canceled

Image
It's been an exceptionally rough week for air travel. As the problems caused by last week’s global tech outage push into this week, it feels like an on-time flight is an increasing rarity. Delta has canceled so many flights that it has prompted the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to open an investigation , citing “the high volume of consumer complaints." Clearly, you want to be prepared to fight for what you’re entitled to when an airline, for lack of a better phrase, utterly screws you over. Here’s how to always get the most money possible from a canceled or delayed flight. What are you entitled to if your flight is delayed?  Earlier this year the Biden-Harris Administration announced a new rule that requires airlines to promptly provide passengers with automatic cash refunds when owed. The purpose of this rule is to make it easy for passengers to obtain refunds when airlines outright cancel or significantly change their flights, significantly delay their

This Device Turns Your Apple Watch Into an Old-School iPod

Image
The TinyPod is one of the more ingenious ideas I've seen in a while: It's a little case for a strapless Apple Watch, which essentially turns it into a miniature iPod, complete with an old-school clickwheel. There's a lot you can do with an Apple Watch these days, from playing music to making calls to navigating from A to B with Apple Maps. All of that functionality is kept, but the device moves from your wrist into your pocket with this compact plastic casing. That has its advantages and disadvantages: You can't track your steps and heart rate if it's not on your wrist, for example, but it does mean you can use the device more easily. The back of the watch is kept accessible, so you can still charge it in the normal way. The TinyPod has that classic iPod look. Credit: TinyPod While a lot of the focus is on playing mu

1Password’s Account Recovery Is Now More Forgiving

Image
1Password just got a major update with lots of new features, finally adding a way for you to recover your account even if you forget your master password. That's in addition to quality-of-life improvements, which let you automatically sign you into your account even if it has multiple login steps. Plus, the service recently added a feature that lets you use a QR code to share your wifi passwords , which I've used to great effect over the past few days. Here's all the best new 1Password features, all of which are available in the latest version of the app on all devices. You can finally recover your accounts Previously, if you forgot your master password and lost your Secret Key, that was the end of your 1Password account. There was no way to recover it, but now there is. You can now set up a safeguard and generate a recovery code. Once you have it, you'll want to store the code in a safe place (outside of 1Password) so that you have another way of accessing your acco

Four of the Weirdest Mac Apps That Are Actually Kinda Useful

Image
At some point, macOS became boring. What was long ago a quirky operating system, today feels sterile and corporate. You can add a bit of humanity back by installing kinda useful (but kinda dumb) software from independent developers. I write a lot about useful applications. This is not one of those articles. Which isn't to say that the apps featured here are completely useless—they're not—but none of them are the most efficient way of doing something. I'm talking about animated flies circling your trash bin and emojis that replace your battery indicator—that sort of thing. Here are some of the oddest ones I've found. BananaBin: Animated, realistic flies when your trash is too full Credit: Justin Pot It's really easy to let your computer's trash fill up without noticing. These Eight Popular Smart Doorbells Are on Sale for Prime Day

Image
Smart doorbells make giving people access (or denying access) to your house easier. Need to let a neighbor in to feed the dog? You can set that up from your phone and then revoke it when you don’t need their help anymore. Plus, you can see who is at your door (and decide if you want to actually answer it), know when packages are delivered, and interact with those at the door when you’re not home using two way video. During Prime Day, these smart doorbells are discounted as much as 60% off. (Note that Lifehacker has not tested all of these models, but they're all fairly popular and well-reviewed.)
